About the artist

Trained as a molecular biologist Louise de Villiers worked on the genetic modification of arable crops.
She eventually moved on from "bench" science and over the years has continued to study developments in the biological sciences.
Her fields of interest have widened to include many aspects of science and the natural world, comprising for example
environmental change, evolutionary biology, social psychology and behavioural science;
medical research and the introduction of new treatments and their impacts.

This inquiry has progressively transformed itself into an artistic expression that seeks to examine
why humans feel the need to modify and restructure themselves and their environment.

Although these paintings constitute a self-contained series ready to be exhibited,
they are conceived as part of a wider study into how science and technology impacts
on nature and our place within it.
